How to Treat Harmful Oral Habits in Children?

Most parents want their children to have good oral health. Hence they keep on encouraging them to follow proper dental hygiene. While most parents ensure that their children brush twice daily,  a thing that remains slightly ignored is the need for regular dental visits. There are many reasons including children’s natural dislike for dental visits.
Regular visits to the kid's dentists can be called as a vital aspect for our kids to help and get a good oral health. However, despite all the efforts from parents, kids tend to wreak havoc when it comes to oral health.

If your children are seen having these bad habits then there are ways to treat them, let's check them out:

1. Trying to Chew hard objects
Hard candy often remains is every child's favorite food item. Parents too are guilty of rewarding their children with these candies for good behavior. However, the problem the kids could face is that at times the children, due to the hard bite,  might end up chipping their teeth while trying to chew these candies. When it comes to dealing with this bad oral habit of kids, it is always a good idea to moderate a child’s intake of hard food items. Ideally, hard candies and other food items must be kept out of the immediate reach or sight of the children.

2. Brushing Too Hard

It is essential that parents teach their child the right brushing technique. Parents need to explain to their kids about the need and the right way of brushing. Children must be taught the habit as early as possible. Many young kids aggressively brush their teeth. The best way to deal with this is to pick a fun toothbrush, set a timer and reward children for following the right brushing technique. Furthermore, it is equally important to realise that children observe and learn from their parents. Hence, parents must be careful and ensure that they themselves are following the right brushing technique.

3. Sucking on Their Fingers or Thumb
This may appear harmless at first sight but overtime the habit can cause issues like tooth deformity, weak gums, etc. As children grow up, the habit can result in bucktooth appearance along with creating a flat appearance over their thumb. As parents, it is essential that they don’t force change but do it in a natural way. Parents must use gentle reminders and positive reinforcement like a gifts and encourage the child to give up the habit.

4. Sugary Snacks or Drinks
If your kids have a sweet tooth or consume too much of beverages, then there is always a risk for tooth decay. You can encourage them to avoid sugary snacks or drinks. Moreover, parents must also ensure that children brush their teeth properly every night before bedtime.
